How to protect your boat during tropical storms or hurricanes

storm lines 300x195

  • Never stay on the boat during a hurricane or even a heavy tropical storm.
  • Remember, that damages to piers and other boats caused by your boat are legally your responsibility.
  • If your boat can be trailered, take it as far from the open water as possible. Leave the dock long before the storm approaches.
  • If you are able, do not leave your boat in dry storage if the storage area is near the water and vulnerable.
  • If you must leave the boat at the dock, tie it up so there’s room to drift up and down with the incoming and outgoing tide.
    • Double the lines and use chafing gear to prevent damage to ropes.
    • Charge the batteries that will run the bilge pump.
    • Take all paperwork and insurance records off the boat before the storm.
    • Make an inventory of items left aboard. Shut off fuel lines and thru-hull fittings.
    • Close all hatches and remove or secure all loose items on deck. Remove electronics to prevent damage or theft.
  • If you are able, do not leave a boat on davits or a lift. If you anchor in a hurricane hole, use at least three anchors.
  • Kayaks, canoes and light trailered boats can be filled with water to make them less likely to blow away.
  • Store trailered boats near a wall, home or another place where limbs or trees cannot fall and damage them. Consider putting your boat in your garage.
  • If you cannot do this yourself, call Florida Boat Detailing LLC at (865) 315-5176 or (904) 624-4439 to take care of your boat (boat minding) for you.
